Thomas Kinkade, the self-described “Painter of Light”, one of the most popular American painters, died on Friday at his home in the Los Gatos area of San Francisco Bay, apparently of natural causes.
One of the most successful painters of all times, Thomas Kinkade was said to be earning some $100 million a year in sales, and his with his paintings to be found in 10 million homes in the United States. In his paintings Kinkade was depicting nostalgic scenes of country gardens, filled with light houses and churches, as well as pastoral landscapes.
“I’m a warrior for light,” told Kinkade the San Jose Mercury News in 2002, referring to the medieval practice of using light to symbolize the divine. “With whatever talent and resources I have, I’m trying to bring light to penetrate the darkness many people feel.”
He was outlived by his wife Nanette and four daughters, who were all “shocked and saddened by his death.”
