Period interior design and decoration at its most inspirational…
With more than 140 exhibitors from the UK and Europe, the Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair takes place once again in Battersea Park from 24-29 January 2012. The event offers interior designers and private buyers an inspirational opportunity to purchase antiques, 20th century design, works of art and pictures, decorative accessories and collectors’ items from the 17th century to the present day.
The Decorative Fair is renowned as a source of unusual and practical furniture, from fine Georgian English and quality Continental for connoisseurs, to painted pieces and country chic for relaxed living areas; fabulous lighting and mirrors; textiles and upholstered chairs, sofas and seating of all kinds; and for original vintage glass and ceramics as well as highly collectable named designer furniture of the 20th century.
Exhibiting dealers carefully select stock with stylish looks, all original, one-off designs that help create an individual look in a design scheme. Their displays provide inspiration for the visitor, and much of the furnishing stock is offered at very reasonable prices, comparable with high street designer home stores.
When decoration becomes a collection…
Anyone who loves beautiful design will appreciate the wide variety of smaller and in most cases very affordable decorative items available from many dealers at the Fair. It is easy to find a treat to take home at well under £100. Cushions created from antique textiles, vintage monogrammed French linens, glassware such as goblets, decanters, vases and sculptural works from the XVIII to mid-XX centuries, treen bowls and decorated boxes, carved wood fragments and panels, ceramics of all periods including creamware jugs for the kitchen and entire porcelain services for the dining table to elegant art deco vases and studio pots, metalware from cast iron Victorian door-stops to Regency brass candlesticks, silver cutlery or dressing table items, vintage toys… This myriad of decorative objects, when purchased for display and decoration of a home, become by rights a collection – a collection that might span diverse periods and styles but when selected by one buyer to whom they appeal, suddenly exist as a unified group.
Something for all budgets
For an affordable treat, one might find a variety of antique and vintage wine glasses and goblets at prices from as little as £25. Mid-century modern Scandinavian ceramics and glass can be found from well under £50. A group of Victorian green glass ‘dumps’, stippled with flecks and bubbles of air, mixed with patterned paperweights, priced perhaps from under £30 to around £100, make a beautiful, light-catching display. Mirror-backed or mercury-lined glass is not too expensive, and the wonderful shapes (and sometimes various colours) of these Continental bottles and candlesticks add sparkle to a mantelpiece or coffee table. Vintage soda syphons come in various colours, shapes and sizes, some with patterned wire covers. Antique glass finials, or even carved wood ones, would group nicely.
The fun is in finding a favourite type of object to start your decorative collection, then visiting the Fair to search out a new item to add to it. The Decorative Fair runs three times a year in January, April and October, sufficiently often to build up a collection quite quickly!
