Semperey Crest

Semperey logo The Semperey escutcheon represents the philosophy and ethos of the company. It follows the ancient rules of heraldry and can be interpreted accordingly.

The shield is sapphire blue, the colour which stands for truth and loyalty and is divided quarterly with a letter “S” on it, which stands for “Semperey”.

The charges (figures on the shield) are owl and feathers. Owl symbolises someone who is vigilant and quick-witted, while feathers are a symbol of serenity and the art of writing.

The border around the shield stands for being different and away from the ordinary.

Oak leaves are a symbol of strength and timeless values.

Lion passant reguardant is symbol of bravery, might and circumspection.

A banner signifies a special action or service of the bearer.

Griffin represents valour and magnanimity that will dare all dangers. In the ancient times it was thought to guard the mines of gold and hidden treasures. It signifies gallantry, death-defying bravery and perseverance.

A sword indicates a just and generous pursuit of honour and virtue. It is also symbolic of liberty and strength. In the Middle Ages, the sword was often used as a symbol of the word of God.

The key is a symbol of knowledge and guardianship.

To indicate that the crest belongs to a company and not an individual, the helm was replaced with the parchment representative of the publishing industry.

The Latin motto “Gloria Virtutem Sequitur” means “Recognition follows virtue”.

“Heraldry and Armory are not a dead science, but are an actual living reality. Armory may be a quaint survival of a time with different manners and customs, and different ideas from our own, but the word “Finis” has not yet been written to the science, which is still slowly developing and altering and changing as it is suited to the altered manners and customs of the present day.” Arthur Charles Fox-Davies, A Complete Guide to Heraldry

The Semperey website is great and unlike many of its ‘sound bite’ online competitors, doesn’t compromise on in depth, descriptive writing. Best wishes.
