Koopman Contemporary Art was proud to presented a fabulous collection of decorative pieces in gold and silver by an outstanding jewellery Jocelyn Burton at Sotheby’s in New Bond Street last week.
Jocelyn Burton, whose name has become a byword for outstanding quality, won the prestigious De Beers International Diamond Award in 1968, whilst still studying at Sir Cass School of Design. Later, in 1974, she became one of the first skilled female Freemen of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and a Freeman of the City of London.
Her work can be found in many private and public collections, palaces and institutions worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and Fitzwilliam Museum, St Paul’s Cathedral, York Minster, 10 Downing Street and the palaces of Sheikh Mohammad Al Makhtoum.
In the 90s Jocelyn was twice voted Designer of the Year in the UK Jewellery Awards and won another De Beers Award in recognition for her originality and the iconic beauty of her jewellery. In 2004 she became the only woman to be awarded the Prince Philip Medal for outstanding achievement in the areas of science, technology and engineering – which became yet another testament to her outstanding technical mastery, craftsmanship and creative vision.
Jocelin’s work is distinguished by its unusual range and variety – her oeuvre is almost impossible to categorise and encompasses silverware, jewellery, flatware, architectural metalwork and glass, lighting and bespoke interior design items. Whatever the scale, she is passionate about creating objects that are both extraordinary beautiful and suitable for use.
In additional to her large scale bespoke commissions, Jocelyn is particularly noted for her exceptional and inventive range of domestic silverware – or ‘jewellery for home’, using gold, silver, precious and semi-precious stones. Every piece is based on her own detailed, tailored to the client’s needs designs, from preliminary sketches to finished hand-coloured drawings, which are prized as works of art for their own sake.
