Fashion Space Gallery at London College of Fashion is proud to announce its next exhibition New Fashion: Interventions in Materials and Techniques ; the first in a three-part series which will showcase the brightest young fashion talent across fashion design, fashion illustration and fashion photography.
Opening on the eve of London Fashion Week this is the perfect opportunity to see some of the UK’s most exciting emerging designers including Derek Lawlor , Fyodor Golan , Felicity Brown and Úna Burke , without the need for a backstage pass or coveted catwalk show ticket.
New Fashion brings together designers whose inspired approach to design and unique contributions to the field of fashion make their work exciting and new. What binds this group together is their imperative attention to detail, craftsmanship and execution that define fashionable dress at its highest level, yet demonstrates radically innovative approaches to materials and construction.
Experimentation serves as a key element in all of the designer’s work, yet the outcome is realised in tangible, wearable and highly covetable garments and fashion accessories. Work on display has been selected from both current and archival collections, highlighting each designer’s personal creative vision.
Featured designers include: Design duo and celebrity favourite Fyodor Golan , who have been described by Roland Mouret as being “unique and stubborn, they do what they want and follow their feeling” and whose unique couture-level creations won them this year’s prestigious Fashion Fringe award.
Knitwear specialist Derek Lawlor , who has been credited by Vogue’s Sarah Mower as producing ‘fabulous knitwear’ has built up a strong following since graduating in 2009 from Central Saint Martins.
Lawlor is distinguished for his incredibly detailed knowledge and application of materials and for his unique cord working technique, which he uses to create spectacularly graphic 3D volumes and effects.
Felicity Brown , who graduated from the RCA in 2002, has worked for some of the industry’s biggest names including Alberta Ferretti , Loewe, Mulberry and Lanvin before deciding to strike out on her own in 2010. Her debut at ‘Fashion East’ was described by vogue.com as “without … doubt one of last season’s biggest hits.” Brown’s use of intensive techniques of fabric manipulation, layering, and deconstruction to create elegant and original designs have created such a buzz that they have been picked up by retailers such as Barney’s in New York.
Eleanor Amoroso ‘s work which has been featured in numerous publications including, i-D, VOLT and Another Magazine represents a return to craft, producing high fashion looks through the ancient art of macramé. In contrast, Nicola Morgan , who has won a clutch of awards including British Design Council New Designer of the Year (2009), the Graduate Fashion Week Innovation Award (2009) and the international competition Mittel Moda; utilises cutting-edge 3D printing technology to create silver plated and enamelled skeletal forms which contour the body and, when coupled with silk jersey, serve as the framework for dynamic tensions between hard and soft, structure and flow. Zyanya Keizer , who launched her eponymous label last year, is distinguished for her intensive beadwork construction, which she applies both to elaborate decorative patterns and remarkable three-dimension shapes.
Also on display will be work by London College of Fashion MA Fashion Artefact graduate Úna Burke , whose visually captivating and technically challenging leather designs have won her widespread critical acclaim in Italian Vogue, Wallpaper and the Guardian; as well as a clutch of awards including the Crafts Council of Ireland ‘Future Maker Student Award.’ Chi Chi Luo , also a recent graduate from London College of Fashion has attracted significant media attention and was hailed a ONE TO WATCH by Vogue.com and Vogue Italia; Luo was also shortlisted for the ‘Most creative student collection’ at the WGSN Global Fashion Awards 2011.
New Fashion has been curated by Leanne Wierzba, Assistant Curator, Fashion Space Gallery and Gemma Williams, a graduate from MA Fashion Curation London College of Fashion.
Through this series of exhibitions, devised by creative director, Magdalene Keaney, the Fashion Space Gallery aims to showcase the role of innovation and creativity in the fashion industry, as a testament to the continued rejuvenation of fashion by a new generation of makers.

I heard that London College of Fashion has an international reputation for design, consultancy and research. My daughter is thinking of applying for it, so it’s a good chance to see students’ works.
